Question: (7/28/2009)
What is the Schlieffen Plan, and is it working in 1917?
Answer: (1/13/2010)
The Schlieffen plan was the plan by Germany at the beginning of World War I to go through neutral Belgium, in order to avoid the French troops along the border between France and Germany, with 90 percent of its forces in an arch towards Paris. It estimated that Paris would fall, and therefore France would surrender, in about 6 weeks, giving Germany the chance to then send all of it's forces against Russia on the Eastern Front because it was assumed that it would take Russia incredibly long to mobilize.
However, the plan failed to work when the Germans met early on with the French at the Battle of the Marne early in 1914 and by 1917 they were stuck in trench warfare.
