Who were some important authors during this time period??
Benjamin Franklin, Abigail Adams, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson
Edgar Allan Poe
St. jean de crevecoeur
Jonathan Swift wrote _A Modest Proposal_ and _Gulliver's Travels_. He was born in Ireland when England had a lot of colonies including Ireland. I think he later moved to England but he was clearly still loyal to Ireland. He wrote _A Modest Proposal_ in response to the Irish potato famine. Swift points out flaws in the British government in his works. He does this using strangemaking in _Gulliver's Travels_. One of his big points against England was against absentee landlords. These were landlords who lived in England and rented out Irish land. The money for the rent would be a hardship on Irish families and would go into the English economy. This was one of the reasons for poverty in Ireland and the Irish potato famine.
