The theme is the lesson or main idea. A good way to discover a theme is to ask yourself "What does the author want me to learn after reading this work? A theme is not simply one word nor is it a cliche saying. The difference between the theme and the subject matter relies in finding the point or the reason. The subject is what a piece is about, the theme is what you are supposed to learn from the subject matter.
