Answer: (1/4/2010)
The albatross is a member of the biological family Diomedeidae. Albatrosses are commonly found in the southern oceans in areas with consistent wind, generally between Antarctica and the southern parts of South America, Africa, and Australia and its surrounding islands. There are seventeen species of albatross, and these birds are known for their unusually large wingspan. The wingspan of some albatrosses can reach up to eleven feet, giving the albatross the largest wingspan of any known bird. While most birds flap their wings in order to fly, albatrosses use a gliding technique. This allows them to cover great distances with little physical exertion. Albatrosses fly over huge areas of ocean and regularly circle the globe. According to statistics from the National Geographic website, “a 50-year-old albatross has flown, at least, 3.7 million miles (6 million kilometers)”. They fly low, close to the ocean, so it is easier for them to reach their food. They eat squid, fish, and crustaceans. In the poem, the mariner states that "the sun came up upon the left," suggesting that the ship is traveling south. This makes sense due to the fact that the albatross is commonly found in the southern oceans.
