Writing Project
A program for Birmingham
area teachers, K-16, in all subjects
The Red
Mountain Writing Project, a National Writing Project site, operates in
partnership with
the Colleges of Education and Arts & Humanities at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham, the UAB Regional Inservice Center, the Montevallo Regional Inservice Center, and all Birmingham area school districts.
Red Mountain
Writing Project is an authorized inservice provider for No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
and related programs, including:
Title I
Title V
High Objective Uniform State System of Evaluation (HOUSSE)
Highly Qualified Teachers (HQT)
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
Staff
Dr. Maryann Manning, Red Mountain Writing Project
Director
Dr. Manning is
a Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction
at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Manning has been
teaching at UAB for over 32 years. Her primary professional
interests include reading and writing instruction and integrated
curriculum. She has authored or co-authored over ten books, over l00
articles, and many book chapters. |

Dr. Bruce McComiskey, Red Mountain Writing
Project Director
Dr. Bruce McComiskey specializes in Rhetoric and Composition,
Classical Rhetoric, and Professional Writing at the University of Alabama
at Birmingham. His most recent publications include Teaching
Composition as a Social Process (Utah State UP, 2000), Gorgias and
the New Sophistic Rhetoric (Southern Illinois UP, 2002), and a
co-edited collection titled City Comp: Identities, Spaces, Practices
(SUNY Press, 2003). |
Mary James, Co-Director
Mary has worked with the Red Mountain Writing Project from
its first summer and became a co-director in Summer 2006. She is a
National Board Certified 8th grade collaborative studies teacher
at Bumpus Middle School in Hoover, Alabama.

Velvet McReynolds, Co-Director
Velvet has worked with the Samford Writing
Project and mentors teachers working on their National Board Certification
through the UAB graduate school. A California native, she also
teaches 7th English at Simmons Middle School in Hoover,
Alabama. |
